Why Should I Use Body Powder?

Body powders are one of the best kept secrets of the well-groomed man. They keep you fresh, dry, and smelling good.

A body powder (sometimes referred to as talc) absorbs moisture, prevents chaffing, relieves itching, and soothes any skin irritation; it's perfect for guys who are on-the-go, prone to sweating, or live in hot or humid climates.

All you have to do is sprinkle a little bit of powder on the areas of your body that collect moisture (under arms, pubic area, feet).

For you single men out there, this is a must-have before you go out on date night, especially if you're expecting any sort of romantic interlude; you'll really pique the interest of your date with parts that smell seductive.

If you happen to be one of those guys that use baby powder, stop. It doesn't smell right on a grown man, so if this is you, it's time to graduate to the big boy powders. There are some really awesome body powders on the market.

Where do you or would you use body powder?

  • Under your arms
  • Pubic area
  • Feet
  • All over your body

Balla Powder

Balla Powder is one of my personal favorites and something I use regularly. It's relatively new to the market and is considered a more premium brand of talc.

Balla Powder is marketed primarily for use on your balls–yes, that's right, your scrotal sac. However, it's really an all-over powder and can be used anywhere. I think Balla markets it as a ball powder to get more attention and customers.

The main ingredients are talc and zinc. The powder is ultra fine and smooth so it glides well onto the body. It comes in original scent, an unscented formula, and get this, a tingle formula! Yes, you can make your balls tingle with talc. I have tried the tingle formula and it does feel good, but the tingle doesn't last that long. Today, I just use the original formula.

I love the smell of the original formula. It's a cool, masculine scent, perfect for a guy, and it really does keep your jewels dry and ultra smooth. Balla Powder retails for about $13 on Amazon.

Anti Monkey Butt Powder

Anti Monkey Butt Powder was introduced to the market in 2003 as an all-over body powder to help absorb excess sweat and reduce friction and skin irritation.

This brand of powder is ideal for for butt-busting activities such as truck driving, motorcycling, bicycling, horse back riding, and extreme sports. It provides temporary relief from itching and soreness related to chaffing.

The main ingredients are talc, calamine powder (for anti-itching/anti-chaffing), and fragrance. The website calls the fragrance "floral" (an odd choice for a product primarily marketed to men, I think). I've never tried this powder but based on many 5-star customer ratings featured at Amazon, I think this must be a great product.

Anti Monkey Butt Anti Friction Powder sells for about $6 on Amazon.

Caswell-Massey Sandalwood Talc

If you're looking for a powder that's a bit more distinct in scent, then you may want to try the Casswell-Massey Sandalwood Talc. This finely textured Italian talc is exotically scented with sandalwood. The only ingredients in this powder are the talc itself and the sandalwood fragrance.

You'll find that this is another highly-rated, 5-star body powder. Some men report that the scent is too pronounced, but there are others who also say that it's just right. Personally, I have not tried this powder, but would love to because I do like the exotic smell of sandalwood.

Caswell-Massey Sandalwood Talc retails for about $15 on Amazon.

Clubman Pinaud

Manufacturing talc for over 200 years, Clubman Pinaud is probably one of the most well-known talcs given its heritage. This is basically the talc the barbershop uses–it's your grandfather's talc (not a bad thing, just different)–but I'm not sure the scent is as modern as many of the up-and-coming metrosexuals would prefer.

This is an all-over talc, so can be used all over your body. Key ingredients include talc, zinc stearate, fragrance, benzyl salicylate, citronellol, geraniol, hydroxycitronellal, limonene, linalool, and zinc oxide. There are so many ingredients, I wonder if this is really the best thing for skin (especially if you're looking for something that's going to help with any skin irritation). However, Clubman Pinaud does have a strong following, and there's no shortage of high praise among die-hard loyalists.

Clubman Pinaud Talc retails for about $11 on Amazon.

Gold Bond Ultimate Comfort Body Powder

Gold Bond has really changed a lot over recent years--it's not the same company with those corny jock-itch commercials in the 80s. They really have stepped up their marketing and product awareness to reach a broader audience.

I think a lot of men were turned off by those commercials, thinking that it was only a jock-itch product when in reality, Gold Bond is no different than the other powders in that it's an all-over powder that can be used anywhere to prevent chaffing and skin irritation while absorbing moisture.

I never had a chance to smell the old Gold Bond powder of the 80s (marketed for jock itch), but the stuff they are making now in the white bottle smells wonderful. It's a fresh, clean scent that I find a bit alluring.

This is a talc-free formula so instead of talc, it uses finely textured corn starch. I will say that even finely textured corn starch doesn't feel as smooth as talc to me (although perhaps I just haven't tried the right kind of cornstarch powder). This is a great body powder, though: it can be used all over, works well, rubs on smooth, and smells great. The scent is the best thing going for this product. It smells truly unique, and it's something your significant other will notice.

Gold Bond Ultimate Comfort Body Powder retails for about $5 on Amazon.

Gold Bond Medicated Body Powder

Gold Bond, the iconic American brand that has been around for over a hundred years, also offers a medicated powder that can be used daily and all over your body. It comes in an original formula and extra strength.

There are two active ingredients in this powder that make it special: menthol (anti-itch) and zinc oxide (skin protectant). This medicated powder is quite popular and known to relieve discomfort from minor cuts, sunburn, insect bites, scrapes, prickly heat, minor burns, rashes, minor skin irritations, and will even alleviate the oozing of rashes caused by poison ivy, oak, or sumac.

They also offer the same medicated product but with a cooling effect, in addition to a foot powder. Gold Bond Medicated Body Powder retails for about $6 on Amazon.

Jack Black Dry Down Friction-Free Powder

Jack Black is a premium skin care line for men and one of two men's skin care lines that's making body powder for men (the other is Matte for Men, discussed later).

Jack Black Dry Down Friction-Free Powder is an all over powder, like most other powders, designed to minimize chaffing, absorb moisture, and relieve any discomfort from skin irritation (and this formula does that all naturally, without chemicals).

This powder is a talc-free formula made from ultra-fine pure cornstarch and certified organic cucumber, green tea, and lavender. There are no parabens, fragrance, or colorants; this is the best option for guys who have sensitive skin.

Its reviews are somewhat mixed. Some men love it and its smell and others like the powder, but not the smell. I'm usually on the fence when it comes to certain organic scents. I'd have to smell it before I bought it... nonetheless, Jack Black is a wonderful and well-known men's skin care line, so I don't doubt that it's a great powder.

Jack Black Dry Down Friction-Free Powder retails for about $19 on Amazon.

Jewel Dust Body Powder for Men

Jewel Dust is one of the newest talc powders to come to market; the company first introduced its product in 2007. Similar to Balla, Jewel Dust has taken a "make your balls smell good to get some" approach in its marketing strategy (which I think is very smart). More guys need to be using body powder anyway, they just don't know it, and well, sex sells....

Even though male genitalia plays a large part in their marketing, this is an all-over powder that can be used anywhere on the body to absorb moisture, fight odor, relieve itching, and prevent chaffing.

Jewel Dust uses cosmetic grade talc that's ultra fine and smooth. The ingredient list includes talc, zinc oxide, and fragrance. Zinc oxide is a skin protectant, used to fight odor and prevent itching. The fragrance is described as a masculine scent, though I'm not sure exactly what that means. Jewel Dust retails for about $10 on Amazon.

Johnson's Body Care Melt Away Stress Body Powder

This is my second favorite body powder. I discovered this gem while on a trip to Thailand but unless you're in Thailand, you won't be able to pick this up at your local store. However, it is available on Amazon.

The powder is scented with lavender and chamomile. Now some guys would consider a floral scented product in a purple bottle girly, but I think the scent is quite neutral, fresh, and clean. I've noticed that many Asian products are lightly scented and not overly floral (if floral at all), so it's really just the essence you get in the products. I find the scent to be quite alluring and seductive.

Johnson's Body Care Melt Away Stress Body Powder retails for about $15 on Amazon.

Matte for Men Man Powder

Matte for Men’s Man Powder is another new product (and is one of the more expensive powders on the market).

This is an all-over powder that can be used anywhere to absorb moisture, fight odor, prevent chaffing, and provide relief from itching.

Man Powder is another talc-free formula made from corn starch, baking soda, tricalcium phosphate, aloe barbadensis, and fragrance (a light citrus scent). While I have not tried the product, I am a fan of the all-natural ingredient list. I think this is the only brand to use baking soda to control odor and aloe to soothe the skin.

Matte for Men Man Powder retails for about $22 on Amazon.

Snake Brand Prickly Heat

Snake Brand Prickly Heat is a product of Thailand, and the Thais know better than anyone about tropical heat and humidity. I'm actually going to be trying this product soon, so I will provide a second update.

Similar to the Gold Bond Medicated Powder, Prickly Heat is an antiseptic and medicated powder. Its key ingredients include menthol (anti-itch), camphor, triclocarban (anti-bacterial), perfume, kaolin, and talc.

While Prickly Heat is the name of the powder, it's also a skin condition that causes itchy inflammation of the skin, typically with a rash of small vesicles (blisters), common in hot, moist weather. Whether you have prickly heat (the skin condition) or not, this is still an everyday, all-over body powder and the medication in the formula will really help relieve any skin irritation.

Snake Brand Prickly Heat retails for about $4 on Amazon.

Sween Body Powder

Sween Body Powder (formerly Fordustin) is probably not that well known and is generally found in medical supply companies and in hospitals. However, those who know about it generally rave about the quality of the product.

Like some of the other aforementioned powders, Sween Body Powder is a non-caking cornstarch-based powder that can be used to absorb moisture, relieve itching, and prevent chaffing.

Sween is quite popular among men who do manscaping around the pubic area; a little known secret is that you can use body powder as a dry lubricant when using a body groomer, so many men actually put this on their skin before they begin shaving.

Sween Body Powder retails for about $3 on Amazon.

If you happen to be in SEAsia, you can pick up the Prickly Heat powder for somewhere between $0.50 and $2. (Depending which currency you are working with/which country you are in.)

About a million years ago when I was young I attended a Duran Duran concert. Simon Le Bon threw a towel into the audience grabbed by a girl near me. The towel was soon enthusiastically crushed into my nose. It was very sweaty and smelled heavily of baby powder which I agree just smells all kinds of wrong on any man over the age of two. Gold Bond Ultimate Comfort is what my entire household uses. Great stuff! I have never seen Sween but at 3/5 of the price I am going to look for it! Another great hub!
